What does the NEBOSH IGC course cover?
The course is split into two units. The first builds your knowledge of how health and safety is managed; the second tests whether you can apply it in a real workplace.
Unit 1 (IG1 / GIC1): Managing and controlling health and safety
- Why health and safety matters: moral, legal and financial reasons
- Leadership, safety culture and human factors
- Health and safety management systems, policy and risk assessment
- Monitoring, audits, incident investigation and review
- Workplace hazards and controls: fire, electricity, work equipment, chemicals and biological agents, noise and vibration, manual handling, musculoskeletal health, stress and violence
Unit 2 (IG2 / GIC2): Practical risk assessment
You carry out a risk assessment of a real workplace, identify hazards, rank risks and write a prioritised action plan. This practical element is why employers value the qualification: it proves you can do the job, not just pass an exam.
Note: NEBOSH introduced a 2025 specification (GIC1 and GIC2) alongside the 2018 specification (IG1 and IG2). Our admissions team will confirm which version your batch follows.
